School Year 2017 – 2018
The Friday Morning Mile is proving to be a really popular event. Many children, parents and siblings have been turning up from 8.30am on a Friday morning to walk or run as many laps of the school playground in 15 minutes. Which house will be the first to walk 84 miles, the length of Hadrian’s wall? What an excellent way to start your day in a healthy and active way.
On Saturday 7th October 2017, Hadrian Academy orienteering squad took part in their first orienteering event of the year at Rothamsted Park in Harpenden. All the children used their map reading skills to navigate round a 1.7km course to find 12 orienteering controls. A special well done to first timers Nasri, Reuben and Ritika.

Tag Rugby Finals – On Friday 3rd March, Miss Weber and Mrs Maitland took our year 5 Tag Rugby Team to the Finals Tournament held at Luton Rugby Club.
There were four rounds in which they played four other schools. Unfortunately, as the competition became tougher we didn’t win any of our games BUT they all did super, super well and we’re all very proud of them. The whole team all tried so hard, even after a few knocks and not forgetting how wet and very muddy they got, they still kept fighting and overall it was a very exciting and fun packed day. Thanks also to the support of parents taking the children to and from the event. Well done to Cameron, Dylan, Ben, Jessica, Freya, Mackensie, Mason, Ryan, Rhys, Liberty and Maisie .
Watch and you will be amazed by the skills of all the children involved in the tournament. Some great passing, tagging and running to score some inspirational tries.
January 2017 – Year 5 attended a tag rugby tournament and played exceptionally well! They played four games and won every single one, which meant that they came first overall! Well done to everyone who took part, you played really well and made a great team! Hopefully we can go on to win the finals at Luton Rugby Club in March.
December 2016 – Our sports apprentice Miss Weber escorted the year 4 tag rugby team along to a recent tag rugby tournament. After a practice session learning various skills they went on to play 6 matches. The team played extremely well and had a great time. They won 2 matches and lost 4 and came 4th overall. Well done to all who took part.
March 2017 – A team of ten girls from year 5 participated in a football tournament which was organised and held at the All Saints Academy. They played six different schools in the tournament winning four games, losing one and being held to a draw in one. The girls played fantastic considering they had only previously had two training sessions together. So it came to the results, which they were all very nervous about, and we came first which is such a brilliant ending. They are now through to the county finals that will be held in the summer. Well done girls.
On Sunday 2nd July 10 pupils from Hadrian took part in an orienteering event at Linford Wood in Milton Keynes. The weather was just perfect for their last event this academic year. They all managed to successfully complete a 2.8km course. This was followed by a super picnic and a visit from Derek. A particular well done to Tristan De Coito as this was his first event. The orienteering squad have been very active this year. If you are in year 3-6 and interested in giving this sport a go please look out for club dates on parent mail.
On Saturday 1st April the orienteering club went to Mardley Heath, near Welwyn Garden City.
The morning started off with some training on revising map symbols and orientating the map provided. This was followed by a woodland walk to find a terrain feature called a ‘depression’. This was followed by a well-earned rest after completing the course and time to analyse our results.
Well done to all the children’s efforts, Hadrian Academy came third in the schools league.
On Saturday 4th March 2017 Hadrian orienteering squad took part in an orienteering event at Chipperfield Common. The morning started off with some orienteering skill training, which was run by top orienteering coaches Susan and Keith Marsden. The children revised map symbols by drawing features on a blank map.
On Saturday 4th February our orienteering team took part in another Hertfordshire orienteering youth league event , which was held at Fairlands Valley Park in Stevenage. During the February half term week Stephanie, Sara, Rebecca and Nicole spent a day taking part in some active orienteering training held in Sherrards Park Wood in Welwyn Garden City. They learnt how to recognise map symbols, orientate a map to find controls and most importantly make new friends that are all junior members of the orienteering club. They were all highly commended by the orienteering coaches on their prior knowledge of orienteering skills.
On Saturday 12th November 2016 children from Hadrian orienteering club took part in a junior youth orienteering event held by Hertfordshire orienteering club at Stanborough Lakes. Despite a wet start the weather got better and all the children completed their orienteering course developing their map reading skills and endurance running. Good results team. If you are interested in having a go at orienteering open the following link- http://www.happyherts.org.uk. Or come and have a chat with Mrs Hanson.
On Saturday 1st October 2016 ten children took part in the first Hertfordshire youth orienteering event of the season at Verulamium Park in St Albans, organised by Hertfordshire Orienteering club.
After arriving by mini-bus Hadrian’s orienteering squad were given a quick revision course on how to orientate a map and what the different symbols stand for.
Kitted with dibbers and maps the children set off round the course. Enthusiasm was maintained by all despite having to run in a downpour. Stephanie Fuller enjoyed it so much she wanted to have another go!
On Monday 12th September the pupils of Hadrian academy had the pleasure of meeting Megan Carter-Davies, who is a professional athlete, and is in the GB junior squad for orienteering.
During her visit she led a whole school assembly, where she shared her knowledge about orienteering and her successes. Then throughout the day all of KS2 had a go at orienteering. As well as having the opportunity to get a signed bookmark and interview Megan Carter-Davies.
To improve the opportunities for the children to do more organised sport and games we have employed Miss Weber, as a sports assistant. She runs a variety of clubs every lunch time and organises games at playtimes, as well as supporting teachers during P.E. lessons.

The year finished with a very successful sports day in June 2016.
On Thursday 28th April a team of children from years 3 and 4 represented Hadrian Academy in a gymnastics competition held at All Saints Academy. After their warm up the children began by taking two turns each on the spring board and pommel horse where timing and balance were essential. This was followed by the team floor exercise where they performed exceptionally well and won the gym competition. The children were so delighted to win gold.
Well done Charles, Millie, Alice, Katrina, Ruby and Freya.

2014 – 15
Ardley Hill held a Netball tournament on Monday 23rd June 2015 which children from year 3 and 4 attended along with Mrs Bozwood Davies, Mrs Webber and parents who stayed to give their support. A lovely summers evening was a great setting for the tournament which was followed by burgers and hot dogs. Everyone had an enjoyable time and played really well and enthusiastically to take second place. Mrs Davies was extremely pleased with this result as this was only their second time playing together. A little more practice and this could be the starting of a Hadrian Academy Netball team.
Sports Day – Following our two sets of sports day activities St Davids were announced the winning team for 2015.
After an energetic morning the points were totalled and all the children in KS1 St Patricks were presented with a medal. Full results of the upper key stage two races will be published in our next newsletter. Well done to all the children and all their efforts for making this a successful event.

Inter House Netball Tournament – The sports co-ordinators at Hadrian organised an inter-school house netball tournament. All children played each other over the week during their p.e. lessons and the winning team was announced as Year 4 St Patrick’s. As a great prize at the end of the week the children then had a chance to play against a mixed group of staff. The teachers were valiant but I am sure their size was a distinct advantage over the energetic pupils.
Cross Country December 2014 – Over 30 girls and boys from our Year 3 and 4 children took part in a cross country competition held at Houghton Regis Academy. All children did extremely well showing great team spirit and determination and we were delighted with how well they performed with Years 3 and 4 coming 2nd. Well done. All children gave 100%.
Judo – It is always good to hear about and encourage the children’s activities and achievements that take place out of school. We celebrate these events every Friday during our Celebration Assembly and pictured below are Darryn, Harriette and Callum looking very proud displaying their bronze medals after participating in a Judo competition.
