British Values, Protected Characteristics and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Protected Characteristics, British Values, and the Sustainable Development Goals are not three separate agendas - they are different expressions of the same fundamental principle: human dignity and the belief that everyone matters.

At their core, all three frameworks say:

  • Every person has inherent worth and deserves respect
  • We are stronger when we work together across our differences
  • Excellence and progress depend on including everyone, not leaving people behind
  • Rights come with responsibilities to treat others fairly
  • Local actions connect to global impact

Protected characteristics define who we must include and protect from discrimination - ensuring no one is excluded based on age, disability, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage/civil partnership, or pregnancy/maternity.

Promoting the Protected Characteristics at Hadrian Academy:

We work to ensure that our children understand that:

  • There are no outsiders at Hadrian Academy
  • Everyone is different and unique
  • We celebrate our differences
  • We are all equal in our differences

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects everyone  from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. The Equality Act protects people against being treated unfairly because of the protected characteristics that we all have. There are nine Protected Characteristics:

  1. 1. Age
  2. 2. Disability
  3. 3. Gender reassignment
  4. 4. Race
  5. 5. Religion or belief
  6. 6. Marriage or civil partnership
  7. 7. Sex
  8. 8. Sexual orientation
  9. 9. Pregnancy and maternity

At Hadrian Academy, we promote these with sensitivity and age-appropriately in our curriculum and in our ethos.

British values describe how we should live together - through democracy (everyone's voice counts), rule of law (fair systems that protect all), individual liberty (freedom to be yourself), and mutual respect and tolerance (valuing our differences).

British Values at Hadrian Academy

“Achieving Excellence Together” embodies all five fundamental British values:

  1. 1. Democracy - everyone's voice is important and everyone’s contribution matters.
  2. 2. Rule of Law - we pride ourselves on having fair systems, consistent standards, and respect for agreed boundaries that protect everyone.
  3. 3. Individual Liberty - each child and adult in our school community has the freedom to be themselves, express their identity, and pursue excellence in their own way.
  4. 4. Mutual Respect and 5. Tolerance - respecting and celebrating our differences and understanding diverse viewpoints, backgrounds, and beliefs.

The 17 Goals of the United Nations

Achieving Excellence Together connects particularly strongly with several SDGs:

SDG 4: Quality Education - "Achieving Excellence" directly supports ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all.

SDG 5: Gender Equality - equal opportunities regardless of gender.

SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities - Working together requires addressing inequalities and ensuring everyone can contribute to and benefit from collective excellence.

For more information on SDGs, see Sustainability and Climate at Hadrian Academy.

Our yearly plan: Year Plan for British Values, Protected Characteristics and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Achieving Excellence Together recognises that true excellence is only possible when we protect everyone's dignity, uphold democratic values, and work toward a sustainable, equitable future - together.
