Curriculum Overview

Achieving Excellence Together at Hadrian Academy underpins everything we do across our curriculum. We are ambitious for our children and we know that excellence is achieved not in isolation, but through working together as a community of learners, staff, families, and pupils.
On each tab, you can explore how we approach each subject in greater detail.
Achieving Excellence Together in the Core Subjects
- In Writing, we have worked hard to build a bespoke Writing Curriculum, loosely based on Pathways to Write but adapted to ensure the breadth and challenge in writing that our children deserve.
- In Phonics, we follow Little Wandle from EYFS to Year 2.
- When Year 2 have completed their phonics Programme and through to Year 6, Reading lessons use VIPERS from Literacy Shed as their basic structure and to ensure coverage of the reading domains. In September 2025, we began using Reading Plus alongside VIPERS to help to improve fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, stamina, and motivation.
- Our Maths curriculum follows the Power Maths scheme from Year 1 onwards and we also use Mastering Number from EYFS to Year 5 to support our children to develop good number sense, fluency in their calculations and confidence and flexibility with numbers.
- The use of Developing Experts in Science ensures we have a fully sequenced, career-connected scientific learning journey from EYFS to KS2.
Achieving Excellence Together in Foundation Subjects
We are highly selective in the curriculum we have chosen for Hadrian Academy:
- For History, Geography, Art, DT, RE, we have opted to follow the curriculum provided by Kapow (https://www.kapowprimary.com/). Not only do they meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, these are imaginative and impactful schemes of work that empower and inspire Hadrian’s teachers to deliver foundation subjects.
- For Computing, we have chosen to follow Teach Computing, created by the National Centre for Computing Education. We are always mindful of the power of technology and social media and the influence they have on our society. Keeping our children safe online is of the utmost importance to us.
- For PSHE and Mental Health and Well-Being, we have adopted My Happy Mind (https://myhappymind.org/) this academic year. Many mental health difficulties begin in childhood. At Hadrian, we are uniquely positioned to notice early warning signs, provide support, and teach coping strategies before issues become more serious. Building emotional resilience early will help prevent problems later in life.
- In PE, Complete PE allows our two specialist PE teachers to select units of learning that cover every context of learning so that our PE curriculum flows in a progressive, sequential order from Foundation to Year 6.
- For Music, we combine the Sing Up Music curriculum for EYFS to Year 3 with specialists from Inspiring Music, who teach together with our Y4, Y5 and Y6 teachers in singing, glockenspiel and drums.
