Music

Intent and Implementation

At Hadrian Academy, we follow the National Curriculum and, through integrating music into daily life alongside discrete weekly music lessons, we strongly encourage children to express and communicate their ideas, thoughts and feelings in a creative way. We use the Sing Up Music scheme and Hadrian is also supported by Inspiring Music, specialist music teachers, who work with pupils in Years 4–6 (extending to Years 3-6 in 2026-2027).

We believe every child should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, to make music with others, to learn to sing, and to be exposed to music from a wide range of genres, cultures and historical periods. This is also brought to life in weekly assemblies where we celebrate musicians of all genres through our Musician of the Month curriculum. Through high-quality teaching, children develop their listening skills, using technical vocabulary to discuss music with confidence and to share their own opinions and ideas.

Pupils build their skills through playing a variety of instruments, including drums and glockenspiel, as well as developing their singing voices. They learn how music can be created, performed, and recorded, exploring both non-standard notation and traditional musical notation.  We provide all children with opportunities to perform and share their music, from class performances to wider school events and celebrations. For example, currently our Year 4 and 5 children perform once a year at The Grove Theatre in July, where their learning in music is celebrated and enjoyed with parents and other schools and our Year 6 children perform an in-school concert of their drumming skills to parents just before Easter,

We believe music plays a vital role in building a strong school community; a shared experience that brings people together and supports every child to grow both individually and collectively.
